The Best Bodybuilding Quotes of All Time

  Mar 27th, 2013

Best Bodybuilding Quotes - ArnoldI don’t know about you, but I love reading a good quote, especially of the bodybuilding variety.

Over the years I’ve come across dozens and dozens of great quotes that have inspired me, given me perspective, made me laugh and added value to my life. Some were deemed worthy for a “share” on my Facebook page and others were noted to be posted on the wall of the gym I hope to open in the near future.

I thought I’d spend a few moments today sharing some of my favorites.

Here is my list of the best bodybuilding quotes of all time…

“There is no value in fat. If you think it makes you look better, you’re only kidding yourself. It’s a blanket of blubber that impedes your comfort and efficiency, shortens your life, boosts you over the melting point on hot days, and hides the muscles you’re working so hard to develop. Getting fat just to make your muscles look bigger makes about as much sense as wearing extra sweaters so people will think you’ve got a big chest.” – John McCallum

“7 months straight. No stopping, no maintenance weeks, no cheat meals. Why? Because if someone beat me, I didn’t want to look back at any cheat meals and ask “what if”. I did what it took every single day, and THAT is why I looked the way I did. You either want it or you don’t. Just so you know, there wasn’t a day that went by in the last 8-10 weeks of that prep where I didn’t want just ONE extra yogurt, or 5 less intervals of cardio. But, I was not going to be outworked! I was NOT going to be denied! And you know what? It was all worth it” – Tommy Jeffers, Natural Pro

“Stimulate, don’t annihilate” – Lee Haney on the topic of sub-maximal training, a concept I’ve been slowly becoming more open to, which leads me to my next quote that I received in person and wrote it down immediately after I heard it…

“Train optimally, not maximally.” Jason Ferruggia

“Everybody wants to be a bodybuilder, but don’t nobody wanna lift no heavy a** weights” – Ronnie Coleman, 8-Time Mr. Olympia

Best Bodybuilding Quotes - Ronnie Coleman

“I believe that when the body is strong, the mind thinks strong thoughts. Time spent away from the Iron makes my mind degenerate. I wallow in a thick depression. My body shuts down my mind. The Iron is the best antidepressant I have ever found. There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength. Once the mind and body have been awakened to their true potential, it’s impossible to turn back. The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.” – Henry Rollins

“If you always do what you always did, you always get what you always got.” – Ronnie Coleman

“You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done. Now, if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You’re better than that!” – Rocky Balboa

Best Bodybuilding Quotes - Steve Reeves“I don’t believe in bodybuilders using steroids. If a man doesn’t have enough male hormones in his system to create, a nice hard, muscular body, he should take up ping pong.” – Steve Reeves

“No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” – Socrates

“The worst thing I can be is the same as everybody else.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

“Who is your daddy and what does he do?” – Arnold Schwarzenegger Wait, how did that one get in there! Moving along…

“You can’t target fat loss. If someone tells you that you can, they are lying, trying to get your money, or both.” – Craig Leonard (I know, I’m like the lead singer wearing his own band’s tee shirt while playing a show)

“Why bother lifting weights if you aren’t following a sound nutritional regimen? Sure, it may be fun, but are you really accomplishing anything?” – Robert Cheeke

“I don’t do this to be healthy, I do this to get big muscles.” – Markus Ruhl

“I don’t eat for taste, I eat for function.” – Jay Cutler

“Today’s bodybuilders are carrying too much muscle for their frames, which distorts and obscures the natural lines of the body. Why these men would aspire to deform themselves at such tremendous sacrifice is incomprehensible…”  – Steve Reeves

“Intensity is just another word for pain. You should feel that intensity every time you pick up a weight. If I don’t feel the sensation of this intensity down to my bones, then I know that have to increase my focus and my weight. It gives me great satisfaction.” – Claude Groulx

“You’ve got to block out all distractions when you train. Your focus has to be 100% into the rep. You’ve got to get into a zone. You know you’re in the zone when guys in the gym look you in the eye and then quickly turn away ’cause they see the fire. You’ve got to be all business.” – Mike Matarazzo

“Winning is not normal, and people who win do so by following an abnormal path. The discipline and dedication and sacrifices are incomprehensible to the thousands, standing outside looking in, who are capable of joining, yet unwilling to pay the price of admission.” – Steve Trippe

“We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.” – Carlos Castaneda

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

Best Bodybuilding Quotes - Arnold2

“Squat more.” – Jesse Marunde, Strongman Competitor

“Suffer the pain of discipline now or suffer the pain of regret later.” – unknown

“The effort one puts in at the gym each week is important, but what truly separates those who are lean and ripped from those that aren’t is the way they’re feeding their bodies the other 90% of their time that is spent away from the gym” – Craig Leonard (some more shameless self-promotion)

“I train, I don’t workout. I have never worked out in my entire life. There is a huge difference between the two. I can’t workout. I don’t know how. Even if I did, I would never do it. It is what they do, and I will never be one of them. I only know one way and that is to go to the gym and train hard.” – Jason Ferruggia

There are others that could have made the list, but these are the quotes I consider to be the best bodybuilding quotes of all time.
